Taxi drivers and operators have threatened to stage national protest actions from September 1 over the implementation of the Bus Rapid Transit system (according to the SA National Taxi Drivers Council). "We are calling for a total stoppage of transport for the taxi industry," said council secretary general, Philip Taaibosch.
Possible impact:
- Transport in all major metros could be impacted (Greater Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town).
- Intimidation of bus drivers not to transport people.
- Protest actions in major metropolitan areas. However, previous experience indicate that it does not exclude that smaller places could also be impacted by protest actions.
- Branches in places like Dennilton, GaRankuwa, Hammanskraal, Tembisa, Khatlohong, Guguletho, Mitchell’s Plain, etc to close during protest actions, (Previous experience of taxi protests indicate that shopping centres, where we have branches in such areas, have been threatened to close in sympathy with these protests).
No duration has as yet been specified for these protest actions.
